Analysis of 7 OClock News/Silent Night by Simon and Garfunkel In expressive arts we are studing the topics the 60ââ¬â¢s. We listened to the song ââ¬Å"7 Oclock News/Silent Nightâ⬠Simon and Garfunkel. In 1956, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were juniors at Forest Hills High School in New York City. They began playing together as a group called Tom and Jerry, with Simon as Jerry Landis and Garfunkel as Tom Graph, so called because he always liked to track hits on the pop charts. As seniors in 1957, they then started writing their own songs in the Everly Brothers rock and roll style. The famous duo wrote and composed many number 1ââ¬â¢s and were one of the most popular groups on the 1960ââ¬â¢s. They worked togetherâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦evil theme. Throughout the song the newsreader gets louder. This may symbolise to the audience that the evil, tragic and negative things are taking over and overcoming the world and goodness. Also because the violence and murder is taking it reminds us that we cannot overlook and forget about these things that are happening. He mentions the fight in the House of Representatives that broke out, in relation with the civil rights bill. He also about the equality between black and white people in the 1960ââ¬â¢s. At this point this is being read the words ââ¬Å"all is calm, all is brightâ⬠this completely contrast from the subject about racism but the song is representing a sense of tranquillity as if everything is okay when it is not. The newsreader talks about may famous and well known subjects that happened in the 1960ââ¬â¢s. One of the most tragic and gruesome topics is about the murders of the 9 nurses; he reads ââ¬Å"The notorious Richard Speck was accused of murdering 9 student nurses, gruesomely stabbing and strangling them one by one.â⬠The words from silent night are ââ¬Å"Silent night, Holy night All is calm all is brightâ⬠, this is another contrast from the moods portrayed from the song and the news, and the newsreader is talking about the murders and grief that occurred at this time. There are so many things that will affect if the education ministry should abolish these two exams. As we all know, UPSR is a public exam that has to be taken for all the standard 6 students, before they proceed from primary school to the secondary school. While PMR is a public exam for a form 3 student, for them to be divided to enter the difference streams, such as science stream, art stream and etc. First question, how to decide whether the child is in Arts or Science when they face SPM if the PMR to be abolished? The minister said that these two exams will be replaced with the school assessment. As such, the UPSR and PMR could be used t o pick students for residential schools or streaming. Base on the comment made by DPM. How do we measure the student performance if both exams held internally? Different schools will definitely have different standards. This will be unfair and it will lead to the fight among the parents, among the teachers and among the students. Second question, how they want to choose students who get to study at boarding school or daily school? Are they going to pick the name randomly like what they did with the National Services candidates? This will also lead to the misunderstanding and trouble in the future. Third question, how about the so-many-type of school such as cluster school lah, smart school lah, and others to be classified if these two exams be abolished? Coz there would be no proper yardstick for the students performance and schools ranking. It seems like they try to create something that oppose to their first creation. Then, regarding to the teachers, when public exams are a bolished, teachers will not be as creative as what the minister expected. When there is no public exam pressure, most teachers will take teaching likely. Syllabus need not be completed and students will take lessons likely. Weaker students will just ignore lessons in classes. Truancy will increase. Currently, teachers teaching exam classes face the pressure to produce good results. They have to conduct extra classes if they cannot finish the syllabus. With no public exam, teachers will not be bothered if they cannot complete the syllabus. Since exams are conducted internally, they just set questions on topics that they had covered. And the rakyat must be wonder how much research has been done on this? What is the alternative PRACTICAL mode to be introduced to help students to become more imaginative in their approach in their reasoning and adaptation to the changing world. All the details are unknown and with a declaration, changes are made. As it is, the fault in the educatio nal system needs more than just a mere announcement that we are going to do this or that. We need a total revamp in the approach, not just the abolition of tests/examinations. And will the minister, please explain what are the actual changes? One day, he says we need to add 1student 1sport, next to include Tamil and Mandarin and now abolished UPSR and PMR. It is very confusing with these flip flop decisions. Because there were so many plans, so many idea to change this and that. It should be done with the proper study first before easily put it on practice. We are just trying to kid ourselves that we can find revolutionary method to change the level of education overnight. Please stick to the fundamentals first before introducing further changes which the majority of the students will not be able to cope with. Maybe the real thing that should be abolished is the Education Higher Education Ministries instead of UPSR and PMR. What the country needs is an Education Commission appoi nted by the King to supervise and set standards. At the state level, there should be Education Boards. Allow greater choices in education. But if they still want to abolish these two exams, I would love to suggest a step further. Just mention that there will be NO EXAMS at all and everybody will be guaranteed a job after completing SPM. No need for teachers or schools or books for that matter. So it will be easier when the student go for the interview later where the interviewers donââ¬â¢t need to ask anything at all. The nutrition teaching assignment focused on grade three children (who are seven to eight years old). The importance of teaching nutrition was evident through observing the children s daily eating patterns. Comparative Study of Texts free essay sample

When deconstructing the text ââ¬ËW;tââ¬â¢, by Margaret Edson, a comparative study of the poetry of John Donne is necessary for a better conceptual understanding of the values and ideas presented in Edsonââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËW;tââ¬â¢. Through this comparative study, the audience is able to develop an extended understanding of the ideas surrounding death. This is achieved through the use of the semi-colon in the dramas title, ââ¬ËW;tââ¬â¢. Edson also uses juxtapositions and the literary device, wit, to shape and reshape the meaning of the drama when studied in alliance to the poetry of John Donne. This alliance has been strengthened by the parallel of Vivian Bearingââ¬â¢s and Donneââ¬â¢s interpretation of life, death and eternal life. This enables the responder to recognise the higher concepts of death and its meaning. Both the play and the poems explore the higher aspects of the human condition: life, death and god; however from vastly different perspectives due to the authors differing contexts. Donne, a 17th century poet, was placed in a society where religious beliefs were dominant and most individuals were confident in their belief of life after death. In contrast, ââ¬ËW;tââ¬â¢ is set it modern times where science asserts more dominance over religion.The differences in context is symbolised by Vivianââ¬â¢s attachment to the IV pole shown on page 19 ââ¬Å"She lies slumped on the bed, fastened to the IVâ⬠[stage directions]. This symbolism shows the audience how, although Vivian and Donne are parallels, the extremities of the problems faced by Vivian are different to Donneââ¬â¢s and how in Donneââ¬â¢s context, people relied on the belief of life after death which contrasts how Vivian has no religious beliefs and therefore places dependence on medicinal procedures.This directly contrasts with Donne as religious beliefs were a major part of his 17th century society. Donne conveys how religion is a central idea through the use of many religious references throughout the holy sonnets. In ââ¬ËDeath Be Not Proudââ¬â¢, Donne makes a religious reference to Jesus, ââ¬ËDie not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kil l meeââ¬â¢, expressing how religion was an underlying theme when handling many issues. When the two texts are studied in alliance, it allows the responder to draw a better understanding of the themes presented in ââ¬ËW;tââ¬â¢. This theme, science VS religion, has been emphasised due to the contrasts between Vivian and Donne and their context. Vivianââ¬â¢s condescending nature is a characteristic that becomes amplified in her own flashbacks. This is shown through the quote, ââ¬Å"So far so good, but they can only think for themselves only so long before the being to self-destructâ⬠¦ Lost itâ⬠this shows how Vivian hides behind her wit which is a parallel drawn from herself and Donne. It shows the audience how they both try to hide from death by using wit.At the start of the drama, Edson alienates the main character through the use of a double meaning; ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got less than two hours. Then: curtainâ⬠. ââ¬ËCurtainââ¬â¢ is symbolic of death and the use of this double meaning engages the audience, not through emotions, but objectives. The main theme explored in ââ¬ËW;tââ¬â¢ is life and death, and the connection between them. Vivian has dedicated her life to being a scholar of Donneââ¬â¢s holy sonnets and is therefore an expert on human morality, however whilst in hospital, her view on life changes. On pages seven and eight, Vivianââ¬â¢s professor, Professor E.M. Ashford is explaining to Vivian how a semi-colon in place of a comma can alter the true meaning of the holy sonnet, ââ¬ËDeath Be Not Proudââ¬â¢. Ashford shows Vivian how ââ¬Å"Nothing but a breath ââ¬â a comma ââ¬â separates life from life everlastingâ⬠. This is symbolic of how Vivian misinterprets death, reflected back in the title where there is a semi-colon in place of the letter ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢. Later on in the drama, Vivianââ¬â¢s view on life changes through Susieââ¬â¢s kindness. Throughout her whole life, Vivian has been in total control and is now placed in a situation where she has no control.Throughout the whole time Vivian is in hospital, Vivian is learning about herself and accepting the emptiness of human contact within her life, which is highlighted through Vivians realisation, now is a time for kindness. The lack of control is a new experience for Vivian thus making Vivian retreat into simplicity. Through the use of the symbolism of the Popsicle as simplicity and Susieââ¬â¢s kindness paired with the quote, ââ¬Å"Now is a time for simplicity. Now is a time for, dare I say it, kindnessâ⬠; shows the audience how Vivianââ¬â¢s pproach to life has changed and how she has started to break down barriers between herself and Susie on a personal level. The quote ââ¬Å"Now is not the time for verbal swordplay, for unlikely flights of imagination and wildly shifting perspectives, for metaphysical conceit, for witâ⬠further emphasises how Vivian has deconstructed her life to become simpler. However, when conducting a comparative study of Edsonââ¬â¢s drama and Donneââ¬â¢s poetry, the responder will become aware that this is not Vivian forcing herself into simplicity, but her rejecting Donne and longing for human comfort which Donne could not provide.This is highlighted through asking Susie, ââ¬ËYoure still going to take care of me, arent you? ââ¬â¢. Vivians ref erence to metaphysical conceit also refers to Donnes overall conceit, which suggests that humanity complicates and dramatises issues, when life, in fact, is simple and should not be over-complicated. Donnes overall conceit is reinforced through Vivianââ¬â¢s wishes for simplicity, suggesting both an acceptance of the circumstances and rejection of the complexity of Donne. Vivian Bearing is a scholar of the 17th centuryââ¬â¢s poetââ¬â¢s work.Vivian critically analyses Donneââ¬â¢s work to bring out the higher and truer meaning of the texts. This is done through Vivian deconstructing Donneââ¬â¢s work. In the same way, Vivian ââ¬Ëbreaks downââ¬â¢ her life and is always reading between the lines. This is shown through the quote ââ¬Å"I read between the linesâ⬠. This draws out the parallel between Vivian and Donne and a comparative study would show how Donne hides behind wit. Through the realisation and acceptance of death through ââ¬Å"reading between the linesâ⬠, Vivian is no longer hiding behind wit and is accepting of what lies ahead.
